Car amplifiers are widely used when upgrading a factory-installed audio system. They allow the best possible sound quality and eliminate distortion that occurs when listening to audio too loudly.

Car amplifiers: 7 key facts

  1. These devices can be single-, dual-, three-, four-, five-, or six-channel. The number of speakers and subwoofers depends on their configuration.
  2. For high-quality sound and a longer service life of the audio system, the total input impedance of the loudspeakers must not be lower than that of the car amp.
  3. Vehicles are usually equipped with АВ and D class devices. The first type are analogue ones that transmit information in the form of a continuous electrical signal, the voltage and current rate of which depends on the frequency of the sound. They provide the best sound. However, they are characterised by low energy conversion efficiency. The second type are digital ones that convert a continuous signal into impulse. They are compact and durable, characterised by low power dissipation, and their microchip is not prone to overheating. They have a wide range of additional options: for example, you can adjust the timbre without impairing the sound quality. However, high-frequency distortion can occur.
  4. When choosing the equipment, it’s essential to take into account the ratio of signal produced to background noise. This specification is referred to as the S/N ratio. In АВ class devices it must be at least 60–80 dB and in D class ones 90–100 dB.
  5. The nonlinear distortion factor that affects the sound quality must not be higher than 1% for D class devices and 0.1% for АВ class ones.
  6. Manufacturers of car speakers and subwoofers usually specify the maximum amplifier power compatible with their products. It is usually 75–120% for high-, mid-, and low-range speakers and 75–150% for subwoofers. At lower values, the sound gets worse and clipping occurs, which could cause loudspeakers to fail. An overly powerful amplifier poses a risk of overloading the connected components.
  7. The power rating of the device must correspond to the total power rating of the connected equipment.
